Working within a minimalist visual language, Jula Lynn begins with the surface, developing abstract compositions of geometric and organic shapes. On canvas, these compositions are first defined, sewn together to set the structure, then activated through layers of acrylic, floor paint, acrylic-based ink, and modeling paste. On paper, she works with brushes and ink on large formats, allowing rhythm and form to emerge while folding, layering, and manipulating the surface. These works are mounted on frames using a technique she developed, and in installations, compositions are often rearranged by sewing new pieces together.
Her practice engages with an observant perspective, exploring how hidden wounds shape experience and how the rhythms of life, impermanence, and the act of transitioning inform existence. It reflects on rupture, vulnerability and the subtle presence of those often overlooked, creating spaces that resonate with the unfiltered, unguarded self. It is not meant merely to be seen; it is to be experienced. Tangible and abstract elements draw viewers into a physical and sensorial encounter, where materiality, rhythm, and the traces of making become a conduit for reflection and presence.
Since graduating with a BA in Textile Design in 2018, Jula Lynn has worked in the studio at Künstlerhaus Dosenfabrik in Hamburg and participates in collaborative projects. Exhibitions such as Liberated Spaces, Silent Voices and Dress Code in Hamburg and Berlin highlight her focus on creating spaces for exchange and considered dialogue.
